Our History

Sterlington was incorporated on August 15, 1961, and held the first town hall meeting Sept. 11, 1961.  Sterlington gets its name from John T. Sterling, who died on Jan. 6, 1859. He is buried in an old cemetery on the banks of Bayou Bartholomew.  The natural gas field in Sterlington was discovered in 1918. The first Mayor was Dr. Folds and the current mayor — the tenth — is Vern Breland.  He is also the first fulltime mayor in the town’s history.  Sterlington has experienced exceptional growth over the last three years.  New building permits issued for 2006 were valued at $4.2 million. The current population is at 1,438.  The town has its own public works department, with three fulltime employees.  There are eight fulltime police officers. The police chief is Barry Bonner. Students in grades K-6 attend A.L. Smith Elementary.  Students in grades 7-12 attend the new Sterlington High School.
